Institutional history
From reform initiative to permanent statutory institution
The Law Reform Commission was first established as an independent body by Executive Order No. 20, effective 11 June 2009. The Legislature subsequently enacted the Law Reform Commission Act, 2011, giving the Commission permanent statutory status and a broad mandate covering law review, research, reform proposals, legislative drafting, codification and publication.

The Commission is empowered to receive and review proposals for law reform, initiate reform work, research particular branches of law, formulate reform proposals, prepare programmes for consolidation, draft bills, promote consistency across the legal framework and publish materials arising from its work.
