The Law Reform Commission participated in a one-day legislative engagement in Monrovia on proposed amendments to Liberia's Witness Protection Act of 2021 and Whistleblower Act of 2021.
The engagement, led by the Witness Protection Agency in coordination with the Ministry of Justice, was described as the third and final consultation in the current reform process. It brought together relevant legislative committees, anti-corruption and rule-of-law institutions, civil society and development partners.
The proposed reforms address implementation gaps, retaliation, confidentiality, institutional coordination and incentives intended to encourage lawful reporting and cooperation with justice processes. The Commission's Chairperson supported stronger safeguards and emphasised that legal protection must be credible if citizens are expected to report wrongdoing.
Recommendations from the engagement are expected to inform the final amendment package before the next stage of the legislative process.
