Environmental Law and the Role of the EPA

A national environmental framework

Liberia's Environment Protection and Management Law establishes a legal framework for sustainable development, environmental management and protection. The Environmental Protection Agency is the principal public institution responsible for coordinating and supervising environmental protection under its governing laws.

Environmental regulation

The legal framework covers issues such as pollution control, environmental planning, monitoring and the environmental effects of projects and activities.

Environmental impact processes

Projects with significant environmental implications may be subject to environmental assessment, permitting or other regulatory requirements. The precise requirements depend on current law, regulations, guidelines and the nature of the activity.

Relationship with other sectors

Environmental law often overlaps with mining, forestry, land, infrastructure, waste management and community rights. A licence or concession from one institution does not necessarily replace environmental requirements administered by another.

The EPA publishes laws, regulations and guidelines. Developers, communities and public institutions should use current EPA material when determining environmental obligations.
