Family law covers more than marriage
Family law can involve marriage, separation, children, guardianship, adoption, support, inheritance and the protection of family members from violence or abuse.
Domestic violence is a legal issue
Liberia's Domestic Violence Act was signed into law in 2019. The Executive Mansion described the Act as addressing domestic violence including physical or mental abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and exploitation.
Domestic violence can raise both immediate safety concerns and legal questions. A person who is in danger should prioritise safety and contact an appropriate protection, justice or emergency service rather than relying only on online information.
Domestic Relations Law
Liberia's Domestic Relations Law contains rules relating to family relationships. Other statutes, including the Children's Law and laws relating to customary marriage and inheritance, can also apply.
Children and vulnerable persons
Where children are involved, legal duties and child-protection principles may require attention to their welfare and best interests.
