How to Participate in a Public Consultation
Practical guidance for individuals and organisations responding to Law Reform Commission consultations.
Before responding
Read the consultation summary, background material, questions and deadline. Where a consultation document is available, review it before preparing your response.
Preparing your submission
A useful response should identify the issue you are addressing, explain your experience or evidence, answer the consultation questions where possible and distinguish personal experience from legal or policy analysis.
You may submit as an individual or on behalf of an organisation where the consultation permits it. If confidentiality or anonymous participation is available, the consultation page will say so.
What happens next
The Commission may analyse submissions alongside legal research and stakeholder engagement. Consultation does not mean that every proposal will be accepted, but it helps the Commission understand how the law operates in practice and what effects proposed reform may have.
