What law reform means
Law reform is the organised process of reviewing existing laws and proposing changes where the legal framework is outdated, inconsistent, unclear, unfair or no longer responds to the needs of society.
The Law Reform Commission is mandated to keep Liberia's laws under review and support their systematic development and reform. Its work may include legal research, consultation, harmonisation, consolidation, codification, preparation of reform proposals and legislative drafting.
Why laws are reviewed
A law may need review because it conflicts with another law, no longer reflects present realities, produces unintended consequences, leaves an important issue unregulated or can be simplified and made more accessible.
Who can raise a reform issue
The Commission may receive reform proposals from public institutions, organisations and individuals. A proposal does not automatically become a formal project; the Commission must assess the legal issue, its significance and available reform pathways.
